When I came across the song “Just A Girl” by No Doubt I was immediately saddened by the repeated phrase “I’m just a girl”. As a girl myself, I felt offended because of how degrading the title and lyrics are to my gender. The song goes on to express different ways in which girls are restricted from doing certain things. This inspired me to create my found poem and develop a new message that is opposite of the one within the song. I wanted to make sure in my poem that the reader is able to understand a girl is not “just” a girl. It is important that a girl feels confident in embracing herself and being proud of who she is.
After reading the song lyrics multiple times, I decided to start searching for phrases that could be cut out and turned into something positive rather than negative. Most of the phrases I chose are taken out of context and transformed into a new meaning. I tried to line the words up like lyrics in a song. There is purposely no extra spaces in between because I don’t want people to be able to add in any words that could alter the one meaning I want to get across. It made me happy as I moved some words around and created this new message that will hopefully help girls to feel more confident.

Hey Ginamarie, I really like your poem. I like how it is short and makes a good point. I also like Gwen Stefani so it was cool to recognize the song.
Hello, Ginamarie, I really liked your poem it was short and sentimental. I like the line “take a good look at me” I think this is a strong line because she is saying that there is more to her than her pretty face. Overall great job.
Hello Ginamarie, I really enjoyed reading your poem. I like how you purposely made sure there were no extra spaces in your poem so that nothing could be added. I like how your poem is straight to the point and starts out with “I’m not just a girl”. You did a good job with getting your message across that a girl is not “just” a girl but is so much more.
Hi Ginamarie,
I really liked your poem! The length was perfect in order to get your overall point across. The overall message of saying that there is more to a female than what her looks are is so important!
Hi Ginamarie, I wanted to comment on your found poem because I thought it was really inspiring and I did something similar with my found poem as well. When song artists write lyrics they might not think about the meaning within each phrase or line. My song victimized women as an object for sexual intercourse so I took phrase and word combinations to create a different storyline with the artist’s lyrics. When using the lyrics from the artist I think it adds emphasis on how these words can be put in different meanings.
