I chose to write this poem using the song Stan, by Eminem. My thought process for creating this poem was to pick out the lyrics from the song I felt were most telling to the point of the poem. The goal of this poem and I believe Eminem’s song is to emphasize mental illness. Mental illness of any kind is affecting an estimated 60 million adults in the United States alone. I kept lyrics like “wondering why I got out of bed at all.” I went through the song line by line to find the best words and lyrics to keep. To understand the value in this, you must know the backstory behind this song. In the early 2000’s when Eminem was the biggest thing in Rap and Hip Hop, he received many letters from crazed fans and was fed up with it. Presumably many of these crazed letters showed signs of mental deterioration and hysteria. Eminem made this song in response to the influx of letters and it became a hit very fast. The man mentioned in the song and his story are fictional, but it could have just as easily been a real life story. Not only did Eminem want to highlight the dangerous nature of mental illness, but he is also quoted after the release of the song in saying “Not everything I say is to be taken seriously.”

In todays world. mental illnesses are rampant in our population. One in every 8 people have a mental disorder of some kind. That equates to roughly 970 million people worldwide who suffer from a type of mental illness. There is something crazy to think about which is with Eminem’s song Stan, there was actually reported an increase in outreach for help with mental illness after May of 2000. Marshall Mathers saves lives.

This poem is personal. There is a law called, “marital presumption of paternity” it is listed on the nycourts.gov website. The law states, “…that the spouse is the other legal parent of a child because the couple are married. This is true even if the spouse is not the biological father or the mother and spouse are not married to each other now”. It does not consider that the spouse may not be the father due to separation or divorce. If the mother was married during the pregnancy, the biological father has no rights to the child.  

To know that someone that has never even met your child, does not even care for your child, has nothing to do with the child, has legal rights. It is terrifying. With no rights, the biological father has no responsibility. They can just walk away until it is rectified. My son is 9 years old; his father has no legal rights or obligations. My spouse lives in a different country, I have not seen him in 12 years. He has never met my son.

            On page 33, in “Citizen” by Claudia Rankine, she includes art by Nick Cave titled Soundsuits. These costumes were made to completely cover the individual’s body, creating a second skin that hides, gender, race, and class and urge the audience to watch without judgment. Relating to this type of artwork, I visited “Nick Cave: Forothermore” at the Guggenheim Museum. These morals were from a survey exhibition that covered Cave’s entire collection of the artist’s career, featured sculptures, and rarely seen early works.

            The art piece that caught my eye the most was Nick Cave’s piece called “Unarmed”, made in 2016, which addresses contemporary societal ills including racism, gun violence, and climate change. All the flowers are made from tiny beads and wire which is an ongoing theme throughout Nick Cave’s work. “Unarmed” looks like a weak hand reaching up to say something or defend its point. The surrounding flowers and leaves represent emotions, ideas, and actions, but also can resemble climate change. When looking at this piece in person I think the use of flowers is to distract and hide the suffering that this hand or “person” is feeling because of racial discrimination and police brutality. I think specifically Cave wanted to resemble the black fist in the air used in the Black Lives Matter movement while emphasizing the continues to fight for rights with the wrinkles and half-curled finger.

            A way I connected this artwork to the novel “Citizen” was when Rankine says, “Whatever the reason for the rots, images of the looters’, continued rampage eventually displaced the fact that an unarmed man was shot to death” (116). The ongoing problem with racial acts and police brutality is the repetition of unarmed victims having no way to defend themselves. This defenseless hand is surrounded by flowers almost like a newly covered grave bordered by flowers when another person has been taken from us.   

I chose this to use this Florida house bill from 1557 because I felt it was something that did irreparable harm to many families across the state. While the bill states that it is only up to grade three, the wording of the terms “Age appropriate” makes it so that this bill can be much farther reaching and that it can affect students that are well beyond this age range. This causes the potentially dangerous bill to be passed under the guise of “parental rights” when in reality it is simply one of controlling otters. While it may seem that this is simply allowing parents to be aware of their children when in the elementary age, due to the loose constraints of the wording, this is not the case. It can put students in danger as if parents are not accepting of their children, which can be a harmful situation to be in, they must now be made aware.

The poem that I found is called the “Offensive Poem.” This poem caught my eye because it is true, and the truth is offensive. Many do not want to hear the truth especially when it comes to something you love such as your country. However, the basic truth is our government does take advantage of us citizens. They use us as pawns in a political game and are always power hungry. Unfortunately, we have elected officials who abuse their power. This is a big issue in today’s society.  We are very compliant as a society that many cannot see the big picture becaise they do not want to believe that the government can be so corrupt. The corruption of the government is one of the reasons why our country is so divided.  

As I was going through the poem, I picked out the key points that I thought were the most powerful. Such as the line “The majority may be silent but they’re thinking men- People know when something’s wrong, when there is danger.” This line really spoke out to me because the silent majority sees in between the lines and the bigger picture. We now, especially more than ever, are afraid to speak out because people, strangers will come after us and try to “cancel” us. Ruining our lives and future careers. Another line that stood out to me was “Truth can be offensive but can never be hidden, it has a way of coming out and spilling over.” There are problems we do not know about, but the ones we do, we have the facts, it makes us wonder with what we do know what else we do not know and when it will be revealed. There are problems we do not know about, but the ones we do know are bad. Which makes us wonder what else we do not know and when it will be revealed. That is my view on the poem, and it tells us more than what we are reading.

When I heard the song “This is America” by Childish Gambino I didn’t understand it fully. After listening to it once I had to look up the lyrics because Gambino has a slang voice in it so I didn’t really understand what he was saying. “This is America is talking about what is going on around in the world, he made this song to show the audience what is really happening behind closed doors. The three lines that say I’m so fitted, I’m on Gucci, I’m so pretty mean that these people only care about designer brands and think if you have them you are pretty. Having a designer shows the people around you that you’re not poor. I really like those lines because I can relate to them while living in the Bronx.

After Reading the lyrics I started to find the most impacted lines that I can see and put them in a poem. Most of these lines are what America wants these days and what the problems we have in today’s society are. We are having a bad time coming together as one. I like this poem that it says Black man, just a barcode. this means that the police are mistreating them because of what they look like. I made the poem straight down because I want it to feel like there are bullet points and straight to the point. I’m glad how this turned out and have a strong feeling this poem can relate to someone else.
