The 1619 Project Episode 1- Extra Credit Assignment

Timothy Beresford

Episode 1 of The 1619 Project centers around the ways in which Black Americans have helped fight for the U.S. and move toward a better democracy. Something in particular the episode focuses on is the importance of voting. The Georgia Coalition of the Peoples’ Agenda is a non partisan organization that has been working for years to defend the right to vote. Most recently in 2020, they had helped mobilize a multiracial group of voters in a dominantly red state and this act has helped shift the power in the government. It is very interesting just how influential and important the right to vote is. As not everybody who is of the age to vote actually goes out to vote. It’s something crazy to think about as it is our given right. Most recently, the Peoples’ Agenda helped in a 2022 poll where a group of elderly and disabled people were told they were unable to vote at the given location. The voting location had messed up their zip codes which made them unable to vote there, rather somewhere 20 minutes away. One of the members of Peoples Agenda brings up that it should not be this hard to vote and she is entirely. It is crazy how complicated it is as this is something everyone has the right to do.

In our society, we are taught freedom of speech, religion, press, and to protest. All the credit on this is given to the founding fathers. But white freedom had become predicated on black slaves and the documentary brings up a great point that black people have been the ones who have been fighting for freedom for centuries. As slaves were considered to be foundational for economy and the laws, they are rarely shown in historical sites. In many ways,  society has erased their history and their stories in doing so. As said in the documentary, in Williamsburg, slaves made up half of the population. Yet their history has almost been forgotten.

Timothy Beresford

Myriam Gurba is the author of Mean. Mean centers around a coming of age story of a queer mexicana as she feels haunted by the ghost of Sophia Torres. Mean focuses on issues such as racism, homophopia, and rape culture. She writes about these dark topics with humor.  I watched Myriam’s Gurba reading at Suny Cortland for extra credit. Something that really caught my attention and threw me off guard is Gurba’s demeanor. In my head and after reading how vulgar and descriptive the book gets, I think I accepted her to be a lot more gruff and extreme. But she is completely soft spoken and soft in her tone. She reads her memoir and talks about it so comfortably, which she would have to as she wrote it and published it to the public. I found that the delivery of the jokes were different from what I read in my head. Gurba reads her memoir as it is intended and it completely makes you think about it differently. Gurba says that writing Mean was a very fractured process. She started to write it 6 years before it was actually published. She never intended to create one continuous story rather just fragmented ones. The first few writings of Mean were completely different from the published story. I thought it was extremely fascinating when she said she initially intended for one of the sexual assaults to be from the perspective of a butterfly and that just seems very grabbing and unique. There are still elements of that in the book though with the blades of grass during the sexual assault. Gurba says that many sexual assault writers will do this and become a third person perspective of the assault and the environment. Considering how dark the book is, I was surprised to hear that there were many things that she did not include in the book as it was extremely hard to talk about. It makes me only imagine how difficult it was for her to write about the things that actually ended up being in the book. Gurba did not purposefully have any specific reader in mind, but she wanted to focus her approach on the book to other writers. She wanted those writers to be able to write about trauma in a different way, with vulgarity and profanity. She also wanted the book to be intended for sexual assault survivors. It was an invitation for them to look at the experience and situation differently. Overall I really enjoyed watching this event as it gives you a totally different outlook on the book. Most of that is due to the way Gurba talks about the book.

Mean is a memoir written by Myriam Gurba. The book explores themes of identity, race, sexuality, violence, and trauma through the author’s personal experiences growing up as a queer Chicana in Southern California. It is a powerful memoir that challenges societal norms and confronts uncomfortable realities. One of the main themes of Mean is the exploration of identity. She explores the tensions and challenges she faced in reconciling these two identities, as well as the expectations placed upon her. Another significant aspect of the memoir is the examination of sexuality. Gurba openly discusses her queer identity, exploring her experiences as a lesbian and the difficulties she faced due to her sexual orientation. She addresses the intersectionality of her identity, highlighting the unique challenges faced by queer women of color. Violence and trauma play a central role in Mean, Gurba recounts her experience of being sexually assaulted, exploring the lasting impact it had on her life. Through her writing, she confronts the discomfort and shame associated with discussing such traumatic events, challenging societal norms, and encouraging a dialogue about sexual violence. The writing style of Mean is characterized by its vulnerability and dark humor. Overall, Mean is a thought-provoking memoir that explores themes of identity, race, sexuality, violence, and trauma. Myriam Gurba’s unflinching honesty and unique voice make this book a powerful and important contribution to the memoir genre. It encourages readers to examine their own biases and prejudices while confronting uncomfortable truths about the world we live in. During the Zoom with Myriam Gurba, I was initially intrigued by how personable Myriam Gurba was. She was very bubbly, talkative, and comical. The background Professor Savonick provides at the beginning of the meeting sounded familiar to some of the discussions we have had in class. She was very humble about the introduction and context given about her and her book, Mean. It was interesting to me to learn more about the writing process behind Mean. Gurba reveals she started experimenting with her writing about 6 years before she published Mean. She did not have any intention of publishing the book, at first. She wanted to write about sexual assault using humor, horror, and camp. It took Gurba a lot of experimenting to end up with the final book. Gurba wanted to offer another way for people to talk about their stories. Someone asked how Gurba can balance feeling expected to tell her story and not. Gurba explains how she wanted to share her story to also help other people feel validated. She feels that in our society we aren’t able to “publicly mourn” trauma and other things. I think the most important theme I have gathered that is portrayed through Mean and everything else Gurba says, is the idea that people get discriminated against no matter what. Gurba touches on how she lived in a predominantly white neighborhood, but she got her windows shot in for being one of the few neighborhoods’ Mexican family. Her brother also got beat up, and their backyard got vandalized. This all happened strictly due to discrimination and prejudice. People could solely be minding their business and still run into trouble. This is what is conveyed the most. For instance, when Gurba says, “If this happens to girls who are nice, what do they have to lose by being mean.” This book was an amazing read, and it was even more interesting to hear the author, Myriam Gurba speak about her book.

Myriam Gurba Review: Nature of the Memoir Mean(Kenari Curry)

Myriam Gurba spoke about the background, production process, and other subtleties of her book, “Mean” at a Cortland event held in 2021. Throughout the discussions, she brought up some extremely intriguing facts and observations regarding her experience. Being mea, as our Professor says, “makes us feel alive, it’s fun and exciting, and sometimes it keeps us alive.” Putting into words the feelings and messages that may be gleaned from this book. The first highlight she mentioned was when she read an extract about a racial conflict that erupted on the playground while she was in fifth grade, resulting in self-segregation. In reaction, she discusses how she formed a gang/micro family to protect themselves from aggression, and how they badly wanted to escape institutions and organizations that abused them. This simply goes to show how serious it is for children to behave and respond to events and/or other people, and what it may lead someone to do, as well as the impact on the community. As an answer to a student, she also discusses her writing process for the book. She surmised that writing the novel was a jumbled process in which she wanted to include both comedy and terror, which led to her constantly attempting to get the desired style. This is further illustrated when she discusses how she intended to express her unsettling experiences from the imagined perspective of the surroundings, giving the account of what occurred a witnessing and outside party sense that is too horrible to recover from.

The highlights also show several parallels between Gurba’s book and Maxine Hong Kingston’s renowned work, “Woman Warrior.” The first is how both “Mean” and “Woman Warrior” delve into the complex issues of race, discrimination, sexuality, and sexual assault, with both authors emphasizing the importance of speaking up and owning one’s narrative as a means of empowerment and self-discovery, as well as confronting the silence that surrounds these experiences unapologetically in the hope of breaking free from societal constraints to reclaim their voices. The second link is how Gurba’s “Mean” and Kingston’s “Woman Warrior” both explore the quest for belonging. Gurba, as a gay mixed-race woman, faces the difficulties of managing many identities, as well as the sensation of dislocation that frequently comes with it. Similarly, Kingston’s protagonist struggles to find her place amid two divergent cultures. Both writers are able to shed light on the inner upheaval and self-exploration involved in the search for acceptance and a sense of belonging. In conclusion, the event provided more insight into the mind behind the book Mean, going over her creation process and detailing how the book made her feel and what meaning should come from it, as well as the message it’s attempting to convey, which I believe is best summarized when our Professor again provided a general message behind the book’s purpose. That is, you should utilize your position and privilege to help others who have been harmed or wronged in life.

The 1619 Project: Limitations of Democracy and Citizenship(Kenari Curry):

The Hulu documentary series, The 1619 Project focuses on the tremendous influence of slavery on the establishment and growth of the United States. The first episode, in particular delves into the complicated link between democracy and Black citizenship throughout American history, connecting with Claudia Rankine’s book “Citizen.” This specific episode serves as a sobering reminder of Black people’s difficulties and tenacity in their pursuit of full citizenship rights. It powerfully illustrates how institutional racism, marginalization, and violence have frequently stained the promise of democracy. The episode demonstrates how Black people have battled relentlessly to resist oppressive systems that deny them equitable participation and acknowledgment in American society via historical narratives and personal testimonies. In terms of parallels with Claudia Rankine’s “Citizen’s, which is a thorough exploration of race, identity, and belonging in contemporary America. It delves into the lives of Black people and the ways in which racism presents itself in everyday interactions, both explicitly and subtly.

Also paralleling the “Democracy” episode, “Citizen” emphasizes the struggles faced by Black citizens in a supposedly democratic nation. One striking connection between the two works is the recurring theme of the erasure of Black voices and experiences. In the 1619 Project, this erasure is exemplified by the historical omissions and distortions that have perpetuated the myth of a harmonious democratic past. Similarly, Rankine’s “Citizen” highlights the microaggressions and acts of erasure experienced by Black individuals in their everyday lives, further underscoring the ongoing struggle for true recognition and equal treatment. Another connection is the confrontation between the issue of racial violence and its impact on Black communities. Highlighting the difficulties experienced by Black people in an ostensibly democratic country. These constant issues to erase Black voices and experiences is a strong connection between the two works. This erasure is represented in the 1619 Project by historical omissions and distortions that have fostered the idea of a peaceful democratic past. Similarly, Rankine’s “Citizen” underscores the microaggressions and acts of erasure that Black people face in their daily lives, emphasizing the constant battle for full acknowledgment and equitable treatment. Another link is the fight over racial violence and its impact on Black communities. Exposing how the psychological and emotional abuse imposed by racially motivated violence has a negative effect on the group as whole, similarly to Citizen in highlighting the need for healing and societal transformation. Exposing how racial violence has been used as a tactic to repress non-white groups political power and freedom. In conclusion the first episode of the 1619 Project focused light on Black Americans’ struggles in America’s pursuit of democracy. Examining the historical and contemporary problems that Black people have experienced in their pursuit of equal acknowledgment, representation, and justice.

Extra Credit Assignment: Episode 1 of “The 1619 Project”

Mackenzie Wiater

For my extra credit assignment, I watched the first episode, “Democracy”, of  The 1619 Project on Hulu. This show is about the history of how black Americans have been treated by their fellow Americans. This episode takes place in multiple different parts of America, including Iowa, Georgia, Virginia, and New York. A woman named Nikole Hannah grew up with a great father, Milton Hannah. Milton Hannah proudly displayed his patriotism for his country because he had served in the army at 17 years old. He showed his patriotism even though America had not treated him and his ancestors well. Nikole first brought the viewers to Atlanta, Georgia to show the issues with voting. A woman named Helen Butler was working in civic engagement work to protect the people’s right to vote and increase engagement in voting. Her job is to also help out with errors in polling, and decrease voting fraud. Then the viewers are brought to Williamsburg, Virginia. The Governor’s palace was a big part of this part of the episode. They talk about a lot of the history during the time of slavery that occurred between enslaved people and colonists. The Governor of Virginia would threaten the colonists by telling them he would free the slaves to stop them from revolting and scare them away. His threat then became reality, and those who agreed to help fight the colonists would get freed. The Southerners were angered by the Governor’s (Dunmore) Emancipation Proclamation.

American slavery began in 1619, hence why it is called “The 1619 Project.” Those interviewed in the episode explained that it feels like they were taught in schools as if it was only a white America. For example, slavery was happening before the Mayflower even sailed, yet no one is really taught that in all schools. The 1619 project got a lot of backlash. Many states tried to get it passed that the 1619 project could not be taught in schools. One state even wanted teachers to wear body cams so they could monitor what they were teaching to make sure this was not being taught. Trump also said in a speech that he believed the 1619 project was “toxic propaganda.” The episode then moved on to Brooklyn, New York. Brooklyn’s Plymouth church was a safe haven for those escaping slavery, and was also called the Grand Depot of the Underground Railroad. This part of the episode showed how black Americans stood up for themselves and refused to leave America, because they were just as American as white people. This is the part of the episode that reminded me of the book A Raisin in the Sun. White people discriminated against black people just like how they did in the book/play. The episode in The 1619 Project showed how black people got in trouble for fighting for equality, and equality is something all the characters wanted in A Raisin in the Sun.
