Yeah, This is AMERICA
Police be trippin’ now
I got the strap
I gotta carry em
This is AMERICA
We just want the money
We just wanna party
I’m so fitted
I’m on Gucci
I’m so pretty
This is AMERICA
Black Man
You just a black man in this world
Just a barcode
This is AMERICA
When I heard the song “This is America” by Childish Gambino I didn’t understand it fully. After listening to it once I had to look up the lyrics because Gambino has a slang voice in it so I didn’t really understand what he was saying. “This is America is talking about what is going on around in the world, he made this song to show the audience what is really happening behind closed doors. The three lines that say I’m so fitted, I’m on Gucci, I’m so pretty mean that these people only care about designer brands and think if you have them you are pretty. Having a designer shows the people around you that you’re not poor. I really like those lines because I can relate to them while living in the Bronx.
After Reading the lyrics I started to find the most impacted lines that I can see and put them in a poem. Most of these lines are what America wants these days and what the problems we have in today’s society are. We are having a bad time coming together as one. I like this poem that it says Black man, just a barcode. this means that the police are mistreating them because of what they look like. I made the poem straight down because I want it to feel like there are bullet points and straight to the point. I’m glad how this turned out and have a strong feeling this poem can relate to someone else.

Hi Michael, I really enjoyed reading your found poem. I am familiar with this song so it was cool to analyze a piece of work I already know. This was a good song to pick because this song has a lot of important messages. It has important messages about America and the corruption throughout it. I like how you highlighted the idea of people in America being very focused materialistic things like brand names and trying to look rich. I think this is an important thing to talk about even though it is controversial and has different opinions and ways to look at it. I also like how you touch on the line “Black man, just a barcode.” I like the way you interpreted it by saying, “this means that the police are mistreating them because of what they look like.” I feel there are many ways this line can be analyzed. The line is so short, but impactful. Overall, great blog post.
Hi Michael, I really liked your post!! This is a great song to choose for this assignment! This is America is a great song that depicts the state of our country today. Everyone today is too focused on material things and wealth. “Don’t catch you slippin up” This also shows the dangers of the United States concerning gun violence.
Hi Michael! I really enjoyed your poem. I especially love the way you structured your poem and your thought process through it all and make it go straight down the middle. I do agree that in todays society we are having a hard time coming together as one now. It feels like everyone today is divided out instead of together.
